Dr Stuart Butterly is a Clinical and Interventional Cardiologist with Sunshine Coast Heart Specialists. He consults at The Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital (Birtinya), Buderim Private Hospital (Buderim), Tewantin and Gympie.

Stuart discovered the Sunshine Coast when he rotated to Nambour General Hospital as part of his specialist cardiology training and resolved to return there to live and practice as a Cardiologist once his training was complete.

Stuart completed his Physician training at the Princess Alexandra Hospital before undertaking advanced training in Cardiology at the Princess Alexandra and Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospitals in Brisbane. He then undertook two years of Interventional Cardiology Fellowship training at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane and Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth, Western Australia.

Stuart’s fellowship training exposed him to a high volume of interventional cardiology procedures including complex cardiac intervention, acute emergency percutaneous coronary intervention (i.e. emergency intervention for heart attack), advanced multimodal coronary imaging, structural heart and valve intervention and novel invasive therapies for resistant hypertension.

Stuart performs coronary angiography and interventions predominantly via the radial artery (wrist) and established the radial artery access and intervention pathways on the Sunshine Coast when he returned. He has a special interest in treating complex coronary artery disease that was previously considered untreatable using the latest techniques and equipment.

Stuart is a keen researcher, publishing on a variety of topics in Australian and international medical journals and has an ongoing relationship with The University of Queensland and The University of the Sunshine Coast with teaching of medical, nursing and cardiac scientist students.

Stuart is committed to providing patient focused, evidence based care for his patients.
